When business owners talk about a strategic business plan, the message to be discussed and introduced is around the strategies to be adopted by an organisation to achieve its goals. An extremely integral part of the plan is financial in nature, but other important elements of the strategic business plan are marketing, human resources, along with other resources required to align the business correctly to achieve it's targets and goals. There, an effective business plan should have four main targets:

It should be used by management as a tool to set goals and targets for an agreed period

The business plan will assist in providing the strategic framework for the ongoing management of the business for a pre determined period.

The business plan will allow the identification and development of objectives and will encourage identification of how these objectives can be both monitored and achieved.

The Business Plan will demonstrate that the development of controls and strategy, using targets and the achievement of objectives, which will in turn provide an effective means of attracting additional new capital to finance the business objectives.

WHICH AREAS SHOULD BE INCLUDED?

The development of a strategic business plan has been often compared to the development of a candidate's CV, when applying for a job. What is important and must be covered off, is that the business plan is not only numbers and figures, but also demonstrates a strong logic of all those essential relevant areas for the business to achieve the the stated targets. Therefore, prior to starting the process of producing a strategic plan, we should ask a number of questions such as:

Who are we?

What can our business do?

Who are our customers and what are their expectations?

Where will our business be in one, two, three, five years?

What can we do immediately to get the business where we want to be?

How can we get there?

Do we have the relevant resources? Equipment, staff, finances, technology?

Does the business need to secure additional external financing and what type of financing is required?

We could keep going on asking many more of these questions, to develop a detailed understanding of the type of plan which we need to put together. It is fair to say that the answers to some of these questions would require more effort in terms of time and resources than others. One of thre most important factors is making sure that we are asking ourselves the right questions, and are these the questions which will lead the business in the right direction. However, the number of questions needs to be thought through, as asking too many questions can lead the business nowhere, with no sense of direction. The objective of this part of the process is to make sure that the business owner or mangement involved in completing the business plan really grasp what the target outcome is and then plan on how to achieve that target.

EFFECTIVENESS AND FLEXIBILITY

Here we will discuss the parts which make up the "nuts and bolts" of a highly effective and well structured strategic business plan which delivers the business targets? The businesses mission, primary objectives and the overall strategy must be determined. There will need to be lots of attention paid to the proposed implementation and also evaluation stages that will occur following the setting of the primary objectives and strategies. It is these elements which are most important to a business plan and it's implementation will succeed or fail. An important part of the implementation of a business plan, is remembering that it can be revised. As the market may change, and there may be technological advances which may need to be factored into the business model which has been developed. Do not be surprised! This is part of the development of the business plan. As every business owner and manager knows, if one is to rigidly stick to a particular plan, where the business pulls too far in the wrong direction, this can sometimes lead a destructive environment, and this needs to be considered.
